Opportunity
They say that opportunity knocks, well from experience it doesn't tap gently, it pounds and the windows and door rattle and I bounce off my chair onto the floor, dust rising up around me. A 2nd close marriage within six months crumbles. What can I learn from this opportunity? I can learn compassion, understanding, forgiveness, new beginnings, hope. I can practice all of the things I learned from my own fragile marriage, and model them for current and new marriages.
A friend spoke with me two weeks ago-she wants to be engaged but is afraid of the committment to a man who refuses to become what she expects. Her own mother took the three of them away from an unworthy father and raised them on her own. My friend remembers the financial struggles and pain of that broken family. She is afraid of a few things: committment for life, fears that he will never become what her father couldn't, and fear of saying no and being alone for life and of failure. Did I use that opportunity to speak of Christian marriages and the role of a wife and mother as servant of God? No, in order to do the popular thing, I disgraced my husband by trying to fit in and complain about some of his bad habits, but did explain that love was important and worth the work, and sometimes the change comes from within vs trying to change a spouse, and that overall it was absolutely worth it.
I can only pray the opportunity to speak to her of the value of marriage comes along again. Will I be ready this time?
Marie
Dear Lord,
Thank you for our husbands. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to love and bless someone so intimately. My prayer today is that we wives would seek to bless our husbands daily. May we be aware of how to comfort them when they are down, bring joy into their lives, and be kind to them through our words and actions. I pray that we would be like the woman described in Proverbs 31, never tiring of doing good for our husbands and family. I pray for perseverance, I pray for energy, I pray for creativity, and I pray that in everything we do we do in love to glorify you in Jesus name AMEN!
